Yermine Richardson hails from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean but now lives and works in Spain. He is primarily inspired and motivated by his experience growing up in the Caribbean, where he used to play in the dark and look up in wonder at the night sky, surreal and full of twinkling stars.
His visual works are vibrant celebrations of Caribbean cultures and aesthetics and reference the traditional semiotics of African heritage including fabric patterning, spiritualism and cosmology. Hair is often a focal point in his work, drawing attention to the richness and beauty of different textures, colours and styles. Much of his work can be viewed as revelling in the power and joy of womanhood, embracing feelings of ownership and self-assurance. His work seizes the gaze as a vehicle for communicating powerful expressions of identity.
