Helena Appio is a Nigerian-born British artist, award-winning filmmaker and textile designer. Appio’s artwork brings the individual together with natural imagery to create scenes brimming with ethereal charm. Blurring the distinction between ‘fine art’ and ‘craft’, Appio’s scenes celebrate the traditions of female creativity and pose challenges to the hegemony of Western art. 

Appio’s series,’The Wisdom of Angels’ is a magical invocation of the way women have taken responsibility for the manufacture of indigo but also for the health, joy and happiness of home and family. Each print is an imaginative portrait of a woman bearing the talismanic iconography of traditional African indigo textile designs. These traditional motifs have a motto or name which describes a blessing, enabling the wearer of the textile to be wrapped in good wishes.

Appio is a graduate of St Martin’s and Middlesex University where she studied fashion and textiles.
