GA Gardner

Dr. GA Gardner’s work has gained international recognition for its complex, multi-dimensional exploration of heritage and identity. His work is self-described as ‘grounded in a Black, cultural agenda’; his practice consciously discusses issues of race, politics, migration and diaspora. Gardner’s Trinidadian heritage is a central tenet of his art, with crisp, three-dimensional images on watercolour commenting on the social element of Caribbean cultures. Other pieces feature modern news-cuttings, shreds of paper, geometric patterning and African weaving techniques to build a layered depiction of both cultural interaction and exclusion.

Dr. GA Gardner was born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the USA in 1988, where he earned his BA in Visual Arts and MA from San Francisco State University. He was later awarded a Ph.D. in Art Education from The Ohio State University where he focused on Computer Animation. Gardner became well-known in the mid-1990s for his digital fine art, animation and multimedia, however since 2007 he has turned to more traditional mediums, creating collages and paintings.

Gardner’s art has been exhibited at various museums and galleries in the USA, Asia and the Caribbean including in New York, China, St Croix and Washington DC. He has been the subject of numerous articles and catalogue essays, and has been awarded artist residencies in the Caribbean and Asia.
