Bola Obatuyi is a mixed-media artist who primarily works using fabric and acrylic paint. Born in Ibadan, Nigeria, Obatuyi’s work centres around a preoccupation with women’s bodies, identities and charm.
Obatuyi aims to use her art as a medium to show appreciation for women within Nigerian society and beyond, incentivised by the belief that art can cure and prevent abuse towards women through creating a rich representation of the depths of feminine identity. Her work powerfully confronts misunderstandings about women, Black women in particular, challenging the viewer to consider their own preconceptions.
Her work aims to reappropriate feminine identity and reframe women as being something to honour and cherish. Obatuyi often makes use of the connection between femininity and the natural world including flowers to emphasise the innate beauty – but also ecological necessity – of both.
Obatuyi earned a HND in Fine Arts from Auchi Polytechnic and has participated in several exhibitions in Nigeria, including the Art Expo Festival 2016, Destiny at Alexis Gallery 2019, Oreze Vii 2019 and Impart Artists Fair 2019. Obatuyi is influenced by artists including Oluwole Omofemi and Andy Warhol.
