Anthony ‘Tony’ Daley is a London-based abstract-expressionist painter. Strongly influenced by master styles, his work is imbued with luminosity and richness of colour, in which surges of light interplay with tonal depths to create visual symphonies. Each element of the painting seeks to commune with the rest of the piece, and this freedom of movement creates the impression that the colours themselves are engaged in perpetual conversation. On close inspection, figures emerge from his canvases in an almost ghost-like fashion, as if in the process of settling and coming into definition. Daley follows in the tradition of a long line of 20th-century masters including William De Kooning, Frank Bowling and Jackson Pollock, however Daley also lists Rubens, Poussaint and Turner as having a major influence on his style.
Born in Jamaica, Daley relocated to the UK at the age of 7. Showing an early passion and talent for drawing and painting, Daley studied first at Wimbledon College of Arts and later at Chelsea College of Arts where he completed his MA in Fine Art. Shortly thereafter, Daley became the first ever ‘Artist of the Day’ in the series of exhibitions at Angela Flowers Gallery, an award which was later bestowed upon Tracey Emin, Nicola Hicks, and Stuart Pearson Wright. His work is held in major collections including those at the Tate, National Portrait Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Cartwright Hall Collection and the NHS Trust, and his work has been displayed in global exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
